Several of the cells have foulbrood scale, the dark build up in the bottom of the cell. The scale contains foulbrood spores. Since the bees can not remove the scale effectively, the spores persist and build up in the comb. Often the remedy is to destroy the comb all together. Jan 17, 2009

Varroa Mite on a Honeybee1050 viewsThe inset picture shows a varroa mite up close. The location of the mite on the bee is not typical. Varroa mites usually hide themselves between the bee's body segments.
