The problem that occurred most often with the queenline jars was floaters in the honey. This can be caused by lint from drying the jars with a paper or cloth towel instead of rinsing them with hot water, turning them upside down and letting them airdry. Several other items that caused points to be deducted from most of the honey classes were: honey on the outside of the container, air bubbles on top of the honey, smudges on the container, and imperfections (such as bubbles) in the glass containers.
Dr. Marion Ellis has agreed to be the judge for the 2009 Iowa State Fair, Apiary Division. He has been a judge at the Fair in the past and we look forward to working with him next year.
During the next couple of months, the rules and descriptions of the various classes will be thoroughly reviewed. Any changes and updates will be posted in the Buzz when they are finalized.
Have a good year and I hope to see you at the 2009 Iowa State Fair.
