We have a full schedule planned as usual. Make
plans to enter the photo contest or the foods made with honey
contest to show off your skills. The rules are listed at the end
of this article for these competitions.
There will be a silent auction on Friday and
Saturday this year, so get some Bee collectibles together to share
with your friends. There will also be an auction during the banquet
of larger items. Regina and her honey queen committee worked hard
at the state fair rolling beeswax candles to raise money for the
queen program. Let's help them complete their funds by donating
items for a great sale.
Some of the featured speakers at our meeting
will be Bob Cox the past Iowa state apiarist and now with the
Weslaco USDA Bee Lab. Bob will be speaking about the use of fungal
control of varroa mites and some of the other research which is
being done at the bee lab. The other speaker at the meeting will
be Allan Dick a retired beekeeper from Canada who will speak about
the differences of beekeeping in the “north” including
bear control, disease methods used “up north” and
honey production and the crops used for honey production. Allan
has also been asked to talk about some of his collected knowledge
on general beekeeping for the hobbyist beekeepers or those of
us who are seasoned hobbyists. Lee Hiney from Wisconson will also
be present on Saturday to discuss what is happening with the American
Honey Board. We will, of course, have the workshops on Saturday
afternoon for seasoned beekeepers and also for the novice. Some
of the classes will be fall queen replacement, packaging and selling
pollen, legal issues with the selling honey/inspecting of small
bottling plants and a local beekeeping showing his invention of
a bee vacuum for the removal of swarms/bee colonies in walls.
Make your plans now to attend the annual meeting of the Iowa Honey
Producer's Association on November 18 and19, 2005.
