Greetings from the President of the IHPA
Dear Iowa Honey Producers:
November always makes me stop to realize how fortunate
and thankful I really am. Don’t get me wrong, I am thankful
every day, but November really brings it home to me. Thanksgiving
is usually lost as a holiday to Christmas because the stores want
to get that early sale. This year we hope to have our whole family
together for Thanksgiving. Mitch (youngest son) is headed back
to Iraq in December. We decided to have a large family Thanksgiving.
Mike’s youngest brother from North Carolina is also planning
to visit. We plan to take family pictures on both sides of the
family.
I think the honey crop is one to “bee”
thankful for this year. Most beekeepers that I have spoken to
have a wonderful crop compared to last year. Now if we can keep
the mites away with the proper treatments, minimize over wintering
losses and keep the honey prices up, we will really have something
to “bee thankful” for.
I hope everyone plans to attend the annual meeting
to hear the speakers and learn different ways to care for honey
bees, eliminate mites, process honey and just some plain old conversation
with other beekeepers to compare ideas and procedures. There is
always something new to learn when talking to beekeepers. Plan
to support our Honey Queen program by bidding on the silent and
live auction items. This is a very important aspect of our honey
association. The honey queens perform a wonderful service by informing
the public about honey and honey bees. We are fortunate to have
so many candidates running for Iowa Honey Queen. Good luck girls.
There are some proposals being worked out to help
the IHPA membership. If you are unable to attend the business
meeting of the IHPA during the annual meeting, we will let you
know the important issues being discussed by an article in the
December BUZZ. If you are able to attend the meeting, please remember
that a motion needs to be written down and handed to the secretary
for consideration. Thanks for all the support and help in maintaining
a strong membership in the Iowa Honey Producers Association. Talk
to your neighboring beekeepers to see if they are members of the
IHPA and encourage them to join. The more members we have, the
more power we have to get issues passed and taken care of.
Enjoy the cool crisp days of Autumn and have a Blessed
Thanksgiving.
Sincerely,
Donna Brahms, President of the IHPA
