Greetings from the President of the IHPA

Dear Iowa Honey Producers,

We are certainly getting a variety of weather. As usual, one minute it is warm and the next minute it is blowing 30 miles an hour and cold. I guess we all really like the changes because we are still living in Iowa.

As you have noticed, the BUZZ has been arriving to your mailbox a little later than we had wanted. We might have to locate another printer to help us get the BUZZ to you on a more acceptable timetable. Tobi has really been a great help in printing and folding the BUZZ for us, but the business she works for is changing formats and we can no longer get the same price and service as before. Please bear with us as we explore the possibilities.

I have been busy talking to school groups. The weather is usually cold and rainy. The children are attentive, but they certainly weren’t dressed for the cold weather. One early morning session of getting the bees ready for a trip to Spencer, they decided that they weren’t very happy with me. Mike offered to help and they weren’t any more pleased with him. Needless to say, we both ended up with a few stings. So much for a hurry-up job. The children were pleased, however. (Note to myself: Don’t expect the honey bees to be happy at 5 a.m. being rousted from their calm, happy hive!)

I need to remind everyone to be checking your schedules and plan a day or two to help in the Iowa Honey Producers sales booth at the Iowa State Fair. We really need to make sure that the booth is a success this year to help with the expenses of the inspection program.

A sign-up sheet is enclosed in this issue. Also remember to place your bids for the products that are sold in the booth. If we don’t have the products, we can’t make the money necessary to run the programs of the IHPA. We have already ordered the tickets and have the ball rolling for another successful year at the State Fair.

Make sure that you check out the web-site for the IHPA. It is:
ABuzzAboutBees.com

Alex Ebert is doing a great job of editor for the BUZZ and as webmaster for the new site. It would be a great asset for you to submit local happenings or anything that you think the membership would be interested in.

Hope everyone is working hard in the bee yard (or the honey bees are at least). If you would like to have the Iowa Honey Queen, Maria Zuber, attend one of your events, please contact Regina Jager to schedule the event. Regina’s number is: (641) 660-0772.

Enjoy the wonderful outdoors; the fresh air, solitude and fun of outguessing the workings in the beehive this season.
Bee Happy,

Donna Brahms, IHPA President
