Central Iowa Beekeepers
Annual Auction
The Central Iowa Beekeepers Annual Auction will
be held at Harry Hunter's place: 2781 SE 70th St Pleasant Hill
on April 23, 2005. Auction will start at 10:00 am. Lunch and snacks
will be available.
More information including directions and a partial
consignment listing will appear in the March and April issues
of the BUZZ.
CIBA members consigning items for sale at the
auction will pay a 10% sales commission if they consign before
March 19. Non-CIBA members and members consigning after March
19 will pay a 15% commission.
Most important rule is that all drawn wax MUST
BE INSPECTED BEFORE it can be unloaded at the auction site, so
call IDALS and ask to get your stuff inspected before you bring
it to Harry's place.
Also be advised---there will be several hives
of bees at the sale site, so you can expect to see them---especially
in any 'wet' supers that are brought.

IHP Board Meeting of January 15th, 2005
The board meeting was held at the Immanuel Methodist
Church in Des Moines. Steve Hanlin announced that Jerry Reynolds
from Kansas will be part of the program for the summer field day.
The field day will be in Ames and Jerry’s presentation will
be on Russian bees.
A proposal from Nick Behrens, an Iowa State student,
was reviewed. Nick made a request for funding to monitor the effects
of fungus on Varroa mites at various temperatures and humidity.
It was voted to give Nick $300 to advance his study.
A proposal from Phil Meyer was also reviewed.
Phil requested funding to purchase a video camera to produce videos
of Iowa beekeeping. The board was interested in this idea but
since the cost of the beekeeping classes is unknown at this point,
the proposal was tabled until the next meeting. The education
committee has six possible locations for classes but it is not
known at this point how many will attract enough people to hold
a class. Once the number of classes is known, an estimate of cost
can be made.
The Iowa Family and Consumer Science Conference
is in Ames during July. They inquired if the IHP would have a
display. Steve Hanlin will attend this event with the honey queen.
There was discussion whether or not to put the
membership list on the web page. It was decided not to do this
as lists are often pirated for unwanted advertising. It was decided
that we did need a new membership brochure.
Gordon will continue with the application for
non-profit status. We have to submit a $500 fee to the IRS and
this will be forfeited if they turn down our application. A motion
was made and seconded to donate $100 to the church for the use
of the facilities.
The next meeting is March 12th.
Education Committee Begins Work
The committee met Dec 11th in Ames. Attending
were John Johnson, Jim Strahan, Ron Wehr, Pat Ennis, Dale Urquhart,
and Phil Ebert. Possible locations for beekeeping classes were
discussed. Initial plans call for John, Jim and Bill Eichold to
hold an advanced class in Spencer and find two locations in western
Iowa for beginning classes. They have taught a beginning class
in Spencer the last few years and have been successful in stimulating
interest in beekeeping.
At present (Jan 16th), Pat Ennis is working with
the Extension Agent in Mason City to hold a class there March
18th and 19th. We need to get ten people to have a viable group.
In addition, Louise Johnson, who is from Guttenberg, is in contact
with two agents in northeastern counties about holding a class
in that area. We will report on future developments.
