Featured Beekeeper of the Month This month we are featuring Vern Ramsey and his wife Doris. They are members of Southeast Iowa Beekeepers, Iowa Honey Producers and live in Birmingham, Iowa. Vern says he started beekeeping in May of 1996 because David Oliver brought him 3 hives. They had a small orchard and were getting poor pollination, so thought the bees could help. Vern had also retired from John Deere in Ottumwa and needed a new hobby. Now he has 15 hives and sells honey.

He says Doris likes this too, but needs to stay away from the
bee stings. I think Vern may have missed his calling, because
he does an excellent job of organizing and teaching our summer
bee meetings and he is interested in trying new methods in beekeeping.
In the past he demonstrated mineral oil and soap solution as a
