Impressions from the Annual
Meeting
I had the strangest feeling driving home from the annual meeting.
It was almost like I hadn't been there. I spent the better part
of two days standing in hallways talking to people. The up shot
of this is that we have an education committee. Quality people
have volunteered for this. John Johnson, Bill Eickhold and Jim
Strahan have volunteered to teach beginning beekeeping across
western Iowa. What is going to happen in the east is unknown at
this point. If there is some program you would like to see in
your area, you need to contact Pat Ennis, Ron Wehr, Dale Urquhart
or myself. If you sit back and wait for something to happen, it
won't.
When I saw that George Clutter was on the meeting program, I wasn't
very impressed. I didn't know who he was. That was a big mistake
on my part. He has organized a great program in West Virginia.
I found it rather ironic that he should happen to show up as we
are starting to think more strongly about education. He gave us
a lot of things to think about. Thanks to Steve Hanlin for inviting
him.
I had a lengthy conversation with Becky Ohrtman from the Ag Diversification
Bureau. She now has most of the apiary responsibilities. I was
quite impressed with her. She wants to help us. The downside is
that she only has 5% of her time to devote to apiary. We voted
to put $5000 toward inspection. One could argue that this is wasted
money. I could easily take this side but I think it is important
to maintain some kind of contact with the state. If we lose that,
it is going to be really hard to establish any kind of program
in the future. While the future doesn’t look very good,
it is important to keep positive contact with our legislators
and look for some point of leverage.

IHP Scholarships
The IHP will be offering two $150 scholarships
to the Master Beekeeper Program put on by Marion Ellis at the
University of Nebraska. This will cover the cost of the course
and part of the motel bill. The 2005 course will be offered from
June 23-25. Applications need to be submitted by March 15th. There
will be a notice in the January "Buzz" about where to
send your applications. This is a excellent course and beekeepers
of any level of experience can get a lot out of it.
