Greetings from the President of the IHPA
Dear Honey Producers:
We had a great turn-out at the 92nd Annual Meeting
of the Iowa Honey Producers Association. Steve Hanlin and his
committee did a fine job of coordinating the details. Unless one
has actually set up this meeting, no idea of what is involved
and the time it takes is known. Thanks, Steve, and committee.
The next meeting of the Iowa Honey Producers
Association will be held in Marshalltown at the Best Western Regency
Inn on November 18 and 19, 2005. Please jot these dates in your
new calendar when you receive one.
Congratulations to the winners of awards at the
banquet. Thanks to all who donated and also to those who purchased
items for the Honey Queen silent and live auctions held during
our meeting.
Congratulations to the new Iowa Honey Queen,
Teresa Jurchen for the coming year, 2005. Teresa is a student
at Iowa State and is from Cumberland. Thanks to all the hard work
given by all of the local Honey Queens during the past year, Chelsey
Soder, Laura Westercamp, and Sarah Smith. Please consider representing
your local areas again and running for Iowa Honey Queen in 2006.
The help these girls give to the honey industry in Iowa is immeasurable.
THANK YOU!
Thanks also goes out to the 2004 Iowa Honey Queen,
Maria Zuber, for her willingness to travel to different parts
of the state and give presentations for the Iowa Honey Producers.
Good luck at the American Beekeeping Federation meeting in January
as you compete for American Honey Queen, Maria.
It is hard to imagine that the year is almost
ended. Lots of good things have taken place for the IHPA. We have
expanded the newsletter, THE BUZZ, with the creation of a committee
and have also started a website that gets lots of attention and
questions for the board to answer. We have also received several
new members because of it. If you have an article to include in
either the BUZZ or the website, ABuzzAboutBees.com, please direct
them to Alex Ebert, the editor of both, at: TheBuzz@ABuzzAboutBees.com
.
The State Fair sales booth exceeded previous
earnings. Rain hampered the Clay Co. fair, but new beekeepers
are enthusiastic and starting a new group in the area. Several
more local clubs are starting up in the state.
I think a great plan is in the works for the
future of the Iowa Honey Producers. Your officers and board members
are hard at work implementing the proposals and motions that were
passed at our business meeting. Thanks for the membership input
into these. We are an organization representing all Honey Producers
in the state of Iowa, please feel free to contact the board with
suggestions or if you wish to be placed on a committee to help
the IHPA.
Mike and I are going to Barstow, CA on Amtrak
to attend Mitchell’s deployment family sendoff in December.
Mitch is going back to Iraq. We need to bring home his furniture
and belongings, so will rent a truck and a trailer for his car.
Hope the weather holds out for us. I guess a short vacation is
better than no vacation.
We extend our Holiday Wishes to all the IHPA
membership. Enjoy the season with your family and check on your
bees from time to time to ensure a great survival rate for the
winter.
Sincerely,
Donna Brahms, IHPA President
